AN APPRAISAL OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS INFLUENCING THE ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES OF SENIOR SECONDARY STUDENTS IN BIOLOGY IN ADO LOCAL GOVERNMENT, EKITI STATE

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Background to the study

Poor academic performance of students had been a matter of concern to Nigerian education. it is accepted that individuals differ in potentialities and abilities. Some students are good in all subjects they study some do well in language arts but not in mathematics, science and related subjects. Some have difficulty in expressing themselves in language but show interest in Mathematics, others are generally good academically. Previously studies had shown that the academic achievements in students are usually affected by the socio-economic background of students. Student who came from more favorable environment usually perform better in achievement and intelligence or aptitude test than students from low socio-economic background. (Owoseni 2011).

Considering the standard of education in Nigeria today and the concern of both the parent and the government over the achievement of the students, it is essential that the quality of education in Nigeria should be improved upon. The improvement of Nigeria school children contains series of actors which can affect the scholastic achievements.

The leaners’ performance is partly as a result of environment in which one grows up. Another factors is the mental value and e encouragement research has shown that the subjective  measure of the attitude and aspiration of parents are more important that the objective measure of material environment by itself (Adigin, 2000).

Furthermore, student from high socio-economic background live in a better and conducive environment than those from low socio-economic background. They are spurred to higher  academic attainment than those from low socio-economic background.

A study of the students home and school variables had been undertaken in order to examine the relationship between the environment of child and his metal ability and achievement.

Statement of the Problems

Recent studies had shown that students from high socio-economic home attend good schools and live in a more conducive environment than children from low socio economic home.

Apart from socio-economic background of the students, more light should be shed on other matter relating to their  education, parental level of education, number of children. Availability of teaching aids in schools, school organization and the trait of the attribute of the teachers.

The objective of this investigation therefore  is  to examine critically the environmental variable and students achievement in senior secondary schools. It is expected that this study would highlight variables on students achievements.

Purpose of the study

The main purpose of this study is to find out extent to which environmental variables determine the students achievement. It is designed to find out the impact of environment on academic performance of students in biology in senior secondary school in Ado Local government of Ekiti State.

Research Questions

  1. What are the negative influence of ICT in academic activities?
