The researcher concluded that availability, utilization, students and staff interest will significantly have an impact on student academic performance in Health Education. The researcher recommended that Health education should of a necessity be a computer literate. They should try to have their own laptop, be in tune and conversant on how to use computer, operate the internet, and learn how to get information they need for any lesson. Also the Ekiti state government should encourage the teachers to use the computer assisted programme (CAP) in teaching health education.

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background to the Study

In Nigeria tertiary institution, university of Nigeria Nsukka in particular, many teaching methods have been used in the past for teaching  and learning, One of the recommended teaching approach by the Federal Ministry of Education is the use of Computer Assisted Instruction (CAI) in the teaching and learning process apart from ICT. Computer Assisted Instruction (CAI) refers to the use of computer as a tool in teaching and training. It includes drill and practice, tutorials, simulations, instructional management, supplementary exercises, data base management, word processing and other types of computer applications.

According to Okundaye (2013), the term may also refer to the stand alone computer learning activities in the computer lesson with reinforced materials introduced and taught by teachers. The students receive feedback from the computer and maintain some degree of control. CAI as a supplement to conventional teacher-directed instruction produces achievement effects superior to those obtained with the traditional approach alone (Akudolu, 2012). Examples of CAI applications include guided drill practice exercise, computer visualization of complex objects, and computer facilitated communication between students and teachers. The guided drill is a computer programme that poses questions to students, returning feedback and selects additional questions based on the student’s responses. Recent guided drill system incorporate the principles of education in addition to subject matter knowledge into computer programme. Some of the CAI tools (such as word processors, spreadsheets and data base) connect, organize, analyze and transmit information. They also facilitate communication among students and instructor, and beyond the classroom to distant students, instructors and experts.

Computer Assisted Instruction (CAI) which can also be described as the use of computer and component electronics in providing learning experiences and self-directed instructions to a learner using tutorial and simulation packages, with little or no assistance from an instructor. In many developed countries, the use of computer as a teaching tool have being in use for a long time has migrated to an advanced stage (Akundeye, 2012). Generally, Computer Assisted Instruction (CAI) allows Students to progress at their pace or speed of learning as Computer Assisted Instruction offers learners controlled instructions; provide prompt feedback to learners, allow for adaptability of instructions (presentations, mode and instructional content mode) using authority systems; provide lessons with more than one purpose; random access facilities and provide facilities for revision and updating, (Akundeye, 2012).

The impact computer assisted instruction (CAI) has on traditional teaching and learning has been described as; it predicted the transformation of the teaching-learning process and the way teachers and learners gain access to knowledge and information. With the emerging new technologies, the teaching profession is evolving from an emphasis on teacher-centered, lecture-based instruction to student-centered, interactive learning environments (UNESCO, 1998 & I.L.O.).

Umaru (2013) stated that Computer Assisted Instruction (CAI) which is a program of instruction or package presented as computer software for instructional purposes have a great possible effect on education rather than the traditional method of teaching.

Therefore, its use in the teaching of Health Education would bring about innovative educational strategy that will enable teachers meet the challenges of teaching and learning of the subject especially in this era of information and technological age.

Teaching method and instruction techniques in the classroom has also been changing and this is influenced by technological advancement. Many potential benefits has been claimed for the use of computer assisted instruction in teaching, for instance Huppert ,Yaakobi & Lazarovvitz (2012),  have noted that in computer assisted instruction (CAI) student have the opportunity to receive supplement contacts with the variable tested in real  life experience . Students can be active during the computer assisted experiment by identifying the problem and generating ways to solve them by themselves at their own pace.

Computer assisted instruction (CAI) is also an interactive instructional method that use a computer to present the instructional materials tracks learning and direct the user to meet his/her individual needs . It allows learner to progress at their own pace and work individually. It provides immediate feedback to the students, if the answer is correct or not, the programme indicates to read the frame again and make choice again which stand as a form of correction. This process will continue to go on until the learner gives and able to clearly understand a correct answer, some software in CAI also helps with the analysis.

A study by Hienich, Molenda & Russel (2014) reported that computer assisted instruction were extensively used for job training in 95 percent of the college of management in the United States of America.  In the college using computer assisted instruction, one out of four( ¼ ) of the faculty and five out of six (5/6) of the total instructional time were given to computer assisted instruction (CAI) related activities (Faria & Nulsen 2012), also found that more than 1700 business schools in the USA used computer assisted instruction software for instruction , more than 200 different types of software were used for this purpose , also computer assisted related instruction has greatly increased up to 78 percent in the developing countries as reported by Clark (2011), Several researches in Nigeria also  have shown that CAI has greatly be implemented and fast rising . Computer has been used in both junior and senior secondary schools and mostly in tertiary institution to teach various subjects (Nwobi & Uwandu, 2011)

According to Ezeliora (2010), the use of CAI provides the learner with different backgrounds and characteristics. And this therefore has being a reason why it implementation has being easy over the year. Its concepts and software are always presented to the students in a way that allow full clarity and easy understanding.

Rivers and Vockel (2015) have found that computer assisted instruction enhances student active involvement in the learning process , and facilitated their practice and mastery of concepts and principles , clearly computer assisted instruction (CAI) helped students to meet their learning objectives and goals (Michael 2010), computer assisted instruction can afford learner numerous advantages for example, firstly provides the students the opportunity to engage in activities that may otherwise be unattainable if traditional means is used . secondly, enhanced academic performance and the learning achievement level of student, and their thirdly, allows student to learn at their own pace and do this with less intimidation or fear to express themselves because of fear to express themselves to teacher because of fear of failure and also in front of their colleague and finally, it can be equally as effective as real live hand-on laboratory experience.

Chou (2010) also noted the significant greater effectiveness of computer assisted instruction and computer simulation instruction as compared to traditional instruction, Slack & Stewart (2012), Johnson & Stewart (2013), and Collins and Morrison (2013) reported that by using a genetics constructional kits as part of a strategic computer simulation and instruction , under graduate and high school students learn to solve genetics programme and to build accurate and rich mental model of genetic knowledge after been differently treated with instructional method between some group of undergraduate in Taiwan university . However Parker (2015) has reported a great difference and significant effect of computer assisted instruction over the traditional method.

Finally, the most important goals of teaching are those of events, for instance critical thinking, analytical reasoning and written and oral communication all occur with the use of computer assisted instruction. Educational systems around the world are making efforts for the effective use of computer to teach student the knowledge and skills they need in the 21st century which will enhance students learning the subject learning the subject matter very fast and convenient to both teachers and learners.

Statement of the problem

The ability to use Computer is necessary just as formal education; as reading, writing, and arithmetic. As jobs become increasingly oriented towards the use of Computer, society demands and rewards individuals who know how to use Computer systems, by giving them special preference over those who doesn‘t know how to use computer. Learning any skill without the necessary equipment and facilities negates Aristotle‘s saying  “that one learns to be a good flute player by playing the flute”. From the researcher‘s observation most of the students in Health Education are unable to carry out simple  operations on a computer such as using the computer software which include simple browsing, word processing, caught the researcher attention.

Also the researcher interaction with some of the students from health education department in University of Nigeria Nsukka, Ikere Campus makes him to observed that they are lacking skills in computer application  and usage they cannot browse and can‘t surf the  net‘ effectively without assistance when given an assignment. There seems to be poor or non-existence internet connectivity, inadequate learning resources related to computer operation and low turnout of students to computer in the department.

It is on this basis the researcher seeks to determine the impact of computer assisted instruction (CAI) on students’ academic performance in Health Education

Purpose of the study

The main purpose of carrying out this research work is to investigate the impact of computer assisted instruction on student academic performance in Health Education department.

This study is set out to achieve the following specific purpose;

  1. to determine the availability of computer assisted instruction in health education department
  2. to determine the utilization of computer assisted instruction for academic instruction
  3. to determine if the staff and students are interested in the use of computer assisted instruction for academic instruction
  4. to determine the relevance of computer assisted instruction in teaching and learning academic performance

Significance of the study

This study will be very useful to teachers of Health Education, who know the importance of computer in their academic applications, since it is gradually taking over the place of the traditional method of teaching. Furthermore, it will give them insight into the various academic knowledge related to CAI.

The study will be of great significance to computer programmers and school administrations in college of education in the sense that, this study will give an insight of what is expected of them in planning for the students and teachers in the future, if they want to turn out trained teachers for the 21st century classroom and labour market. Also, the design, planning and developing of software will reflect the principles and practical application of CAI with the classroom context and help them to provide for individualized instruction to meet special needs.

The study will be of great significance to the Ministry of Education, as well as Ministry of Science and Technology, as they are the principal determinants in the pedagogic aspect of computer in Nigeria. The findings of the study will enable them to understand the situation and position of CAI towards quality of education as it will offer students various degrees of control over their own learning, enable instruction to be tailored according to individual student‘s needs, and enable the ministry to get feedbacks on student performance and store it for further reference.
