IMPACT OF ICT IN THE TEACHING AND LEARNING OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE

IMPACT OF ICT IN THE TEACHING AND LEARNING OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Background to the Study

English is the one of the most widely used languages in the world; the ultimate purpose of teaching and learning English is for effective communication to take place. Therefore, in the process of teaching and learning it is particularly important for teachers to develop student’s listening and speaking skills. Considering the present situation in the teaching and learning of English most students pay more attention to the written examination and as a result their English speaking and listening ability are relatively poor.

The purpose of teaching and learning English is to develop students’ ability in order to get richer knowledge through English .The link of listening and speaking in English language teaching is easily neglected by teachers. Parts of teachers focus is more on explanation, and students focus more on memory. They can only answer questions and memorize grammar, and their communication with others is almost blank.

English is a sound language as well as any other languages, it is used as a tool to spread and exchange ideas, and it main purpose is for communication. Through communication we get more knowledge, more information and promote to know each other. According to Robert [2003] for effective teaching and learning to take place, the skillful teacher needs to use different methods and techniques of which no one of them can be regarded as the best for every teaching situation. This is however assumed that carefully designed teaching method can work wonders in making learning more effective.

Information and Communication Technology has been used in almost all fields of life, including in education. In education, computer technology has become so essential that the government put ICT as one of the curriculum in education. The utilization of ICT in education has recently started to appeal to the potential and significant progress in language learning. It has become a major issue in education world and has been used from preschool through to university that could facilitate students and teacher in teaching and learning process. ICT has been publicized as potentially powerful enabling tools for educational change and reform. The computers play significant role in the learning process especially in learning English language. As Hartoyo (2008) stated in his book, a computer is a tool and medium that facilitates people in learning a language, although the effectiveness of learning depends totally on the users. The technology in this era has been grown up not only from the quality but also the efficiency. They are moving fast without any limit from every product. The need of technological innovation has brought the communication revolution and rapid development of technological application in teaching and learning. This technology made contribution on improving English language communication in Nigeria.

Every school has used the ICT to facilitate the teacher to teach the students in the classroom. Many kinds of application that they use in the classroom improved and enhanced the better lesson.

Hartoyo (2008) also asserts that English language teaching has been shaped by the search for the ‘one best method’ of teaching the language. Regardless of whether the focus of instruction has been reading, the grammatical rules and vocabulary of the target language (e.g. Grammar Translation Method), speaking (how to communicate the target language such as Direct Method, Audio-Lingual Method, The Silent Way, Suggestopedia, Community Language, Communicative Approach), or other issues (e.g. The Total Physical Response Method), the attempts of the teaching profession have been shaped by a desire to find ‘a’ better way of teaching than the existing method.

The latest method that is developing is Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL). Some experts and practitioners of education learning language in CALL, strongly supports the utilization of ICT in English language learning to improve efficiency and effectiveness of learning that can improve the quality of understanding and mastery of the English language studied. In other words, the integration of ICT in the field of language learning is inevitable known that the ICT and language learning are two aspects which support each other like two sides of the coin inseparable (Hartoyo, 2010). Fortunately, the use of Computer Assisted-Learning language (CALL) has increased noticeably by English teachers. Consideration of Computer Assisted Language Learning is using computer. This tool is flexible, rich and interactive. It is flexible in the term of time and place. It has also assumed that more than other media can encourage students in learning English language. This is due to the computer’s ability to present material in more diverse ways than either book or video does. In addition, CALL is able to generate interaction and improve communicative competence, including providing authentic material to the class or self – learning. The method focuses in computer utilization to enhance English Language learning. It is on this background the study will examine the impact of information and communication technology on the teaching and learning of English Language in Ado –Ekiti.

Statement of the Problem

It has been examined by scholars that different problems are bedeviling the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the teaching and learning of English Language in Nigeria. These problems, include the unstable power supply, misuse of computer and internet for watching pornography and engaging in internet fraud, lack of computer- literate English Language teachers, inability of teachers and learners to harness the relevance of ICT as space for teaching and learning in schools and lack of computer and internet facilities in Nigerian secondary schools,

Another problems also notice is the way some students and teachers (users of ICT) abbreviate words when using ICT tools; words like “Y” instead of “Why”, “thks” instead of “Thanks”, “b4” instead of  “Before” etc. all these pose challenges to people reading these words.  Based  on the foregoing the research work tend to investigate the impact of Information and Communication Technology in the teaching and learning of English Language in Ado Ekiti.

Purpose of the Study

The main purpose of the study is to examine the impact of ICT in the teaching and learning of English Language in Ado-Ekiti.  The specific objectives are

  1. To investigate how information and communication technology improve teaching and learning of English Language in Ado -Ekiti
  2. To investigate if information and communication technology enhance English students performance
  • To examine how efficient and effective ICT facility in each school are been utilized

Research Questions

The following research questions would be used for collecting facts on the study;

  1. Can the use of information communication technology improve teaching and learning of English Language in Ado -Ekiti
  2. Can the use of information technology communication enhance English students performance
  • How efficient and effective are the ICT Facility in your school?

Significance of the Study

The study would enable teachers and students to use appropriate ICT tools in the teaching and learning of English language in schools respectively. It could unravel the level of teachers and learners’ exposure to ICT. The research would serve as an eye-opener for the government, education ministries, curriculum planners, schools, seekers of knowledge, and concerned bodies on  the impact of ICT in the teaching and learning of English language. The study would also serve as a guide to student who may want to carryout research on the same topic or similar topic i.e it would add to the existing literature  for researchers and students.

Delimitation  of the Study

The study would be delimited to  the  impact of ICT in the teaching and learning of English  Language in Ado-Ekiti. The study will be delimited to five secondary schools in Ado Ekiti.
