ABSTRACTS

This study was conducted to examine the negative influence of information and communication technology (ICT) on academic activities of senior secondary school students in selected schools of Ikere Local Government Area of Ekiti State. A survey was conducted by using a questionnaire for information gathering about different factors which are causes of negative influence of ICT on academic activities of students, such as mis-use of ICT tools, lack of good school counselor to counsel the students on how to use ICT materials and failure of parents to monitor their children and at the same time suggestion that can be followed by both the teachers, parents, federal government and the students on the prevention from the mis-use of ICT tools.

 

 

 

 

CHAPTER II

INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

In this era of globalization and technological revolutions, education is considered as a first step for every human activity. It plays a vital role in the development of human capital and linked with an individuals well being and opportunities for better living (Battle & Lewis, 2002).

Information and communication technology (ICT) are electronic technologies used for information storage and retrieval. Development is partly determined by the ability to establish a synergistic interaction between technological innovation and human values. The rapid rate at which ICT have evolved since the mid 20th century, President, Nigeria internet group (NIG). Bayo Banjo (2014) said in the Nation News Newspaper when talking on steady decline in students’ performance that there are some bad sides to the widespread adoption of Information Communication Technology (ICT). According to him, most of this students are busy chatting on phone and playing with computers and laptops, students nowadays depends on “Orijo” which makes reading culture t be on a low ebb . They are found of cutting corners, another one is this job called yahoo-yahoo, a lot of our young people and even older people are involved in this but of course, in any new innovation there are always the bad sides. The growth of ICT has provided criminals with a whole host of different methods to try to relieve you of your hard earned cash which is very common among secondary school student in Ikere Local Government, they use computer to steal money, steal data or information, steal some one’s identity, damage or disrupt someone’s system for revenge cause general havoc for fun, copy of software, films and music and all these causes corruption among secondary school students. The main issue is that ICT plays a greater role in common crimes than people tend to think student become too relevant on computers and not learn skills thoroughly enough for example, they may use phone or computer to do some mathematical activities rather than learning and understanding it themselves. They may be able to get a good result, but not really know what it means, students may not fully engage in research and experiments but use search engines for resources, manual research like going into libraries, and talking directly to people is often better and helps students to gain better understanding.

ICT has boosted education, but cautioned on the negative effect, students have taken examination malpractices at almost every stratum of education to another level. Head, French linguistic at the Lagos State College of Education of the sector Akeusola (2013) noted that some students have used this platform of owning a mobile phone for example to propagate examination frauds, stressing, “Some of item store answers on their phones and take this into examination hall”.

It Realms Online investigation revealed that since the advent of GSM in the country it has contributed to vast developments in the country.

Yet, apart from improving and accelerating productivity in various ventures, it has also led to developments in the education sector, thus easing the stress usually encountered by students in performing such tasks. Therefore, the use of mobile phones in exam malpractices as yet another set back and even as no know  perpetrator has been brought to books or conclusively trialed.

Described as e-cheating among the students, the cell phone technology seems to have provided a smart way to beat the effort of government and civil society groups to stamp out the menace.

Apart from all these negative influence mention most of these students who engage in internet fraud for example yahoo-yahoo, after stealing money through the internet, they spend the money lavishly, buy cars and started driving even without having a license and other requirements. Most of them even answer calls, text messaging, changing the radio station and all other sort of things that causes distraction while driving and these may eventually lead to accidents.

Another case is that of time management most students don’t longer have time to read and revise what they have been taught in the school instead they spend most of their time on mobile phone, computers and laptops, chatting, watching online TV, operas and movies, which makes reading culture to be on a low side and all these things has expose most of the students to corruptions.

In term of finance most of the student spend their pocket money on buying credit for their daily or monthly subscription and these short change students financial capacity.

 

 

Statement of the Problems

Negative influence of ICT on the academic activities of secondary school students is a very important issue to be accorded due to the fact that there has been steady decline in the standard of education through the use and widespread adoption of Information Communication Technology (ICT)

 

Objectives of the study

This study aims at investigating the factors that contributed to Negative influence of ICT on the academic achievement of senior secondary students.

This study will help to identify some factors that influence students negatively in their academic achievement, known their causes, the effect, solution and prevention.

 

Significance of the study

The significance of the study is that

  1. It will help both the teachers and the parent sot recognize the causes of steady decline in students academic performances
  2. It will help the school administrators to proffer solutions to the resultant problems of mis-use of ICT tools
  3. It will also help the teachers / counselors to effectively counsel the students on how to used ICT tools to enhance better school performance
  4. To know the preventive measures parents should take in preventing these children from the negative influence of ICT on there academic achievement.

Research Questions

This study will answer the following research questions

  1. To what extent does the usage of ICT materials e.g. cellular phone affect students time managements?
  2. To what extent does the usage of ICT materials e.g. cellular phone exposes students to corruption
  3. To what extent does viewing of movies affect the commitment of students to their academic work?
  4. To what extent does the usage of ICT materials e.g. cellular phone affect the financial prudence of students on the campus?
