RELEVANCE OF INFORMATION COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY ON ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF NCE AND DEGREE STUDENTS OF PHYSICS STUDENTS IN IKERE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

            The entire world has been metermorphonized into a global village by Information and Communication Technology.

Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) are now of no doubt, being accepted as part of our contemporary world as they are perceived as tools for rapid changes in technology, schools, political and global economic transportation. The penetrating influence of ICT is not only limited to these spheres of human endeavor but also to the field of education where  it is perceived as a transforming agent in education delivery and educational methodology. As observed by Hoostrup (2004) perhaps the greatest achievement of the 20th and 21st centuries was the development  and application of the ICT to all facets of human endeavor. According to him no work of science has so significantly impacted on the course of human development as ICT because it has positively transferred effectively and efficiently event aspect of human life such as accountancy, agriculture, aviation, banking commerce, communication, culture, entertainment, education, global security, journalism, library, medicine research, science etc.

According to Olorundare [2006], utilization of ICT in schools curriculum development, implementation and evaluation, there is no doubt that ICT has found its riches in education development in the education sector in both developed and developing countries attest to the fact that ICT has becomes a central focus of many countries education policies and such its use and integration has become widespread in the various schools system. As an agent of change for effective teaching and learning of physics, the benefits of ICT can be best estimated in terms of its potential as a source of knowledge, a medium to transmit contacts in physics from the teacher to the students and also ICT series as means of interesting potential for providing access and opportunities for networking.

Education which is one of the science subjects is the study of natural and physical phenomena and matters. Physics education, is the field on which concerned with showing of physics contents and experiments and process with individuals’ not traditionally considered part of the scientific community physics is basically about becoming aware exploring, understanding, and exercising some degree of control over the environment through the senses and personal exploration (Frinosho, 2005).

 

Statement of the Problem

Obviously methods have changed from what it used to be during the ancient days compare to this our own time and period, of course grater highest can be achieved today with the integration and impact of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in teaching and learning Physics in our secondary schools. One of the most trends is the using of internet facilities such as computer, bulleting boards, electronic, notice board, video conferencing, projector and so on for effective and easy delivery of physics education. Therefore, this research project intend to see the whether the utilization and implementation of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) facilities for effective teaching and learning of physics education in our higher institution can have any noticeable effects on the teachers physics delivery in the classroom.

 

Purpose of the study

The purpose of the study investigated the extent of the impact of ICT on teaching and learning of physics and found out whether student were taught physics with the use of ICT materials such as computer system, internet facilities, projectile, video-player etc performed better than those taught with textbook only. Information and Communication Technology  has become a central focus of many educational fields, its uses and integrating has become a widespread in physics education. furthermore, it identifies the factors militating against its utilization and recommends the plausible panacea for effective and efficient physics education.

 

Significance of the study

In 21st century, the influence of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is not negligible, hence its significant to physics education cannot be overlook. The result of this research project will be significant to all physics educational planners and curriculum implementation in improving and encouraging the use of ICT in importing physics education in learners. It is also significant to the physics students in terms of improving their study skills and gear them towards striking very hard to meet up with their counterpart from other European countries where ICT utilization has become the easiest means of solving physics calculations and experiments.  It also highlights the immovable advantage of ICT as it relates to physics learning so that the notion can produce not only physics student or physics educated populace that is academically enlighted but also populace that is technologically and economically productions.

 

Scope and Limitation of the study

The following are the scope and limitation of the study on the impact of ICT on academic performance of NCE and degree students of physics students

  1. The finding shall emphasize on the use of ICT and of it impact to all physics students
  2. Invention of ICT which shall be catered for so as to improve the former means of dissemination of information and then change in academic performance were observed.
  3. Another limitation of available research on the impact of ICT on students’ overall academic performance. Although research findings show that ICTprogramme can increase overall academic performance in the student matter. In much case ICT can impact the students’ academic performance.

Research Questions

  • Is there any relationship between Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and physics education?
  • Is there any impact of ICT facilities for effective teaching and learning of physics education?
  • What are the influence and benefits of ICT on physics education
  • To what extent does ICT influences the academic performance of students in physics
  • What is the level of availability of ICT infrastructure in university of Nigeria, Nsukka

Hypotheses

  • ICT will not significantly enhance easy delivery of physics educationtexting and learning
  • ICT will not significantly provide necessary physics information for the learners on students
  • ICT will not significantly help the physics students to avail themselves with the opportunity of current knowledge and skills.
  • There is no significant relationship in ICT influence the academic performance of students in Physics
  • Availability of ICT infrastructure has no significance difference in University of Nigeria, Nuskka.

 

Definition of Terms

ICT: Information and Communication Technology is an umbrella term that includes any communication device or application, encompassing radio, television, cellular, phones, computer and network hardware and software, satellite system and so on, as well as the various services and applications associated with them, such as video-conferencing and distance learning. ICTs are often spoken of in a particular contexts, such as ICTs in education, health care, or libraries. The term is somewhat common outside of the United States.

PHYSICS: Is the branch of Science concerned with the nature and properties of matter and energy. The subject matter of physics, distinguished from that of chemistry and biology, includes mechanics, heat, light and other radiation, sourced, electricity, magnetism, and the structure of atoms .

ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE: Communication and collaboration skills, student motivation, and independent learning.
