CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF STUDY
Since the first decade of this century there has been considerable interest in the sexual attitude and behaviour of the adolescents. This has been of great interest and concepts to adults in general and educationists in particular. It is generally believed that adolescent period, is a period of intense sexual drive and experimentation. One can explain sexuality within a biological and development frame work, yet it is equally important to examine the social and cultural attitude and beahviours.
This facts is supported by Gebhard (2001) as he rightfully observed that the meaning of sex for various people depends upon the social contest in which it develops. The Nigeria public today seems to be expressing a lot of concern about the high incidence of sexual laxity among the youth especially among the secondary school adolescents.
The numerous writings and views expressed in our news media and some empirical studies conducted on the topic are clear evidences of the peoples’ concern.
1.2 PURPOSE OF STUDY
This study is designed to identify the sexual behaviour and contraceptive practices among female students in selected senior secondary schools in Ikole Local Government, Ekiti State.
The problem to be examined include those of initial interaction between the numbers of the opposite sex. Their physical, self perception, involvement in sex, personal value for sex-education.
It is also to investigate whether they are aware of any family planning method and which of those method are being sued. Also to investigate any of the family planning devices that are available in the locality.
1.3 STATEMENT OF PROBLEMS
Human sexuality in general and adolescents sexuality and the use of drugs in particular are concerned with a vast number of issues, facts, myths and problems. They range from the biological to the moral, from the philosophical to the medical, from the socio-logical to the religions. Considering the physical dimensions,. It may not be taken for granted that boys and girls get along together without inhibitions, such inhibitions may stem from physical features like pimples, stature, late or early development of secondary sexual characteristics among others. It may also be connected with physiological matters like the fear of acceptable, affections, feelings of self unworthiness, communications and even masturbation. Other aspects are degree of sexual involvement, caressing, romance, kissing and the use of contraceptives.
1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The study is significant in the sense that of all the problems attendant on the adolescent of those involving sexual adjustment get the greatest attention and are more emotionally involving. It is therefore necessary to understand that sex drive is a reality and adolescents do not know to how stop in their hetero sexual behaviours. We used to bear in mind that the ways in which adolescents find their sexual identity and express it, are extremely varied. This, it is obvious that the sexual problems could be identified and diagnosed, the counselors and others in helping professions would be in a better position to help the adolescents to attain proper sexual adjustment and the “Storms and stress characteristics of adolescent will be drastically minimized if not completely eliminated.
