This research work aims at investigating the role of electronic media in the teaching of English language in Nigerian secondary schools with a case study of some selected secondary schools in Ado local Government Area of Ekiti State. The purpose of the study is to find out the role of Electronic media in the teaching of English language in Nigerian secondary schools. Two sets of questionnaires were administered to obtain information or relevant areas, one set for teachers and another set for the students to determine whether the role of media in senior secondary schools has any prospect for the future, as well as identifying specific problems encountered by teachers and students in the process of learning English language in secondary schools. Students perform woefully in English language as a result of inadequate provision of electronic media. Electronic media play vital roles in the teaching and learning of English language. Some of these roles are as follows: it facilitate learning and give room for students and teachers interaction. It develops the good use of English language to students and also leads to success of students’ academic performance in English language.
The researcher adopted random sampling technique in each of the schools selected in senior secondary schools as sample for the project. Five senior secondary schools were selected, forty students per school and two hundred students in all the five schools.
Background of the Study
The role of media in teaching and learning of English language combining academic study with the design and development of materials enables the students to develop their theoretical understanding of core language in teaching and learning issues and enhance analytical and investigation skills. Teaching English to speakers of other languages requires more than just an understanding of the grammar or perfect pronunciation. Using specific methods and appropriate media, English teachers can better interact with their students and help them achieve their language goals. An effective English language teacher must serve as a model for his/her students to emulate. To be good model, a teacher must be embedded with the qualities in language skills such as reading, writing, speaking and listening.
Electronic media are media that use electronics or electromechanical energy for the end users to access the content. Is the usage of medium, uses the application of phenomena of electronic via, radio and television are suggested in the study as a way of improving the teaching of English language in secondary schools? Since English language is inclusive in the syllabus and even made compulsory for all students its role cannot be overemphasized. Language has been a sort of limited lingua franca among educated people in Nigeria. English language has acquired the states of an official language in Nigeria and as not only bridged the communication gap among different ethnics groups but also as medium of communication among literates of different linguistic groups. Through the use of English language Hausa indigene could discuss with Yoruba indigene without any obstruction.
It is require of all learners to be thoroughly versed in English and also an important requirement for award or certificate admission into higher institution. From the time immemorial, there been poor performance of student s in English language that could be traced back to many factors such as;
- Non-availability aids.
- Inadequacy of professionally trained English teachers.
- Exposure of poor standard of language.
- Inability to write legible and speak good English as expected among the students.
The advance technology in Nigeria has giving room to rapid increase in the numbers of television and radio station. In view of this, many researches are being carried out in some states in Nigeria to know the effect of mass media in our society. This study was carried out to the extent to wish television and radio influence the teaching of English language in Nigeria secondary schools, particularly in Ado Local Government Area of Ekiti State. However the development of mass media such as television, newspaper and radio e.t.c. have contributed immensely to the teaching of English language and the students spent a greater percentage of their time listening to radio broadcast, watching important and educative programs on the television. These media were, designed to entertain, educate, broaden people’s outlook and offer new ways of learning and self expression. In essence, the important of media such as television and radio to the teaching of English language cannot be treated with levity hand since students academic performance are largely depended on the amount or resources made available for teaching the subject.
Media: This is a mean of transmitting the message, thought, opinion, and view point. In the beginning man used horse and other animal to send the message to the receiver. It took time to deliver the message and the probability of spoiling the message was on the top. Now men have entered the age of science and technology. They have explored the farther space. They have got a tremendous achievement in many field as well as media. There are two types of media; print media and electronic media.
Print Media: The industry associated with the printing and distribution of news through newspapers and magazines. Print media are still forming an important part of media industry. Basically said, words printed with ink on paper that is attached in different ways, provides different kinds of information, education, and entertainment. They consist of cover, chapters or themes, pictures, advertising and so on and mostly emphasis is made on make-up. Print media include all printed forms of press: newspaper, newsletters, booklets, magazines posters and pamphlets as other printed publication such as books and printed literature.
Electronic Media: This is information or data that is created, distributed and accessed using a form of electronics, electromechanical energy as equipment is used in electronic communications. The initial form of electronic communication was the telegraph. In attempting to refine telegraph technology, Alexander Graham Bell discovered that he could broadcast his voice across a telegraph wire in 1876. This was followed by radio, television transistor radios and now it has reached up to the modern computers. This innovation was followed by other advances in electronic communication media: radio was introduced in 1895; television in 1927, early computers in 1942, the transistor in 1947 and ultimately the minicomputer of the 1960’s, which exploited a technology called “integrated circuits”. Electronic media devices have found their way into all parts of modern life. The term is relevant to media ecology for studying its impact compared to printed media and broadening the scope of understanding. It able to provide every branch of human knowledge. Surveillance interpretation, transmission of values, entertainment and linkage mixed up with a huge amount of advertising characterize its content. Information can be transmitted by audible [Radio] or audio-visual [TV, film] means. They provide speech, music, sound; silence and pictures that combined are formed.
Statement of the Problem
Education is an area of change, this is because traditional methods of teaching are being questioned and re-examined the universal are surged to education an inspiring challenge. This had led to the invention of many technology media devices and systems appeared to offer major contribution to the effectiveness and efficiency of education institution examples of these innovations are film strips, slide projector and opaque projector e.t.c. This study is designed to carry out a research in Ado Local Government Area of Ekiti State television and radio station, so as to find out:
- Whether there are similarities between the roles in which radio and television in Ekiti State operate with other states where a similar research has been carried out.
- Whether there are adequate instruction materials in school.
- Whether the students learning ability were increased with the aid of electronic media.
- Whether formality is reduced in the atmosphere of learning.
- Whether the students are exposed to the ideas and mysteries.
In order to study English language and be successful at it, the students must be helped by the teacher to acquire skills in the four language arts skills; namely, speaking, reading, listening and writing.
Language is the vehicle of social interaction and we need effective language to function properly in the work place, social interaction, and indeed for functional literacy. It must be emphasized that a person is functionally literacy when he has acquired the knowledge and skills in reading and writing which enable him to engage effectively in all these activities in which literacy is normally assumed in his culture of group. The teacher must use a variety of methods for teaching English language. Many good teachers are adaptive rather than rigid in their approach to teaching students and only loosely base their instruction on a giving method.
Purpose of the Study
The purpose of the study was to find out the extent to wish television and radio facilitated the teaching of English language in secondary schools. Television and radio are effective in stimulating of mental activity because they are interesting and relatively easy to master. This means that television and radio program should have positive effect on teaching of English language, since the students who exposed to the use of such instructional program learn better because the setting is more like an out of school situation in which the atmosphere is formal. Nowadays, the interest being developed towards the use of television and radio program is increasing rapidly. Hence, there is need to examine the impact of the media on education and development to study. Therefore, intended to find out how teaching of English language could be facilitated through television and radio and it was also set to find out the extend to wish they had gone in helping the students in the learning of English language. It would assess the optimistic effect of those programmers and suggests positive way of improving the program.

It was hoped that the finding of the study would create the necessary awareness for the teachers of English language so that they would see the need to incorporate what the learners through television and radio program into the school curriculum to facilitate the students’ interest. It was hoped that it would enable the media situation to know the effectiveness of their transmission and the students to understand how they could learn English language in meaning and positive way through the conglomeration of visual and sound, and by improving on it. It was hoped that the study would be contribution knowledge.
Delimitation of the Study
This study was restricted to selected secondary schools in Ado Local Government Area of Ekiti State and they were randomly selected to represent all the schools in the whole of Ado Local Government Area.
The media stations were confirmed to be:
Nigeria Television Authority [N.T.A]
Ekiti State Television [E.K.T.V]
The following research questions have been formulated to guide the study.
- Are the electronic materials such as television and radio sets are in schools?
- Do secondary school teachers use instructional resources such as television and radio frequently in teaching English language in schools?
- Do the English language teachers use appropriate methods in teaching English language in the use of media frequently?
- Do secondary school students learn English language in environment conducive to learning?
- Do the students watch educative programs?
There is no significant different in the usage of the instructional materials and learners at 0.05 level of significant.
There is no significant different between electronic and non-electronic media at 0.05 level of significant.
